Lost in Translation

This time next week I'll be high up in the air, flying over the Atlantic Ocean towards Cuba. The fact that my flight from the Netherlands to Cuba via Mexico takes about 8 hours doesn't bother me. I'm used to long flights, always have been. No surprise if you take into account that my parents took baby me on multiple intercontinental flights. I enjoy those flights now. That time between departure and arrival is a true break from everything. Everything except my hyperactive thoughts, that is. The minute I board a plane, my thoughts go crazy. Don't believe me? Let me show you what I thought about on my last intercontinental flight from Helsinki to Bangkok!

Can we go already?
Okay, I know we're not scheduled for take-off for another 15 minutes, but can we go already? Everyone is seated and if we go now we'll be in Bangkok even sooner! Wait, did we just move? Are we moving? It seems like... No, that was just my imagination... Or is it? Seems like... we are moving! Ready for take-off. Finally!

The world is so beautiful from up here
This is one of my favorite things about flying: seeing the world from above. It's so beautiful. I always hope I get to see my hometown from up here. Everything looks so calm and peaceful, as if there's not a single problem in the world. It makes me calm down a little. I could look out of this tiny little window for ages.

If I start watching now I could watch at least three Marvel movies
As much as I love the airplane view, I still like movies a little bit better. Especially when there's nothing but grassland to see. So if I start watching now, with 8.5 hours of this flight left, I could watch at least three movies of two hours each. One more if I don't take breaks and don't fall asleep. I want to watch Deadpool first, then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Maybe I'll watch a few episodes of American Horror Story as well. That'll keep me entertained till we're somewhere above Myanmar. Now less thinking, more binge watching!

Did we just fly over Delhi?
We flew over Delhi and I missed it! I've been wanting to see that city since forever, even just seeing it from above would have made me so happy. And now I missed it because I fell asleep after Guardians of the Galaxy... Stupid sleep, what do I even need you for?

I hate airplane toilets so much
I don't really want to go, but I'll have to. That sound when the toilet flushes... It's like the whole plane is going to get torn into a billion pieces. Okay, calm down Envy. Here's the plan: do what you have to do, wash your hands, open the door, step outside, reach into the bathroom, hit that flush button and run as fast as you can, away from that awful sound. Ready? Flush! RUUUUUUUN!

Why can't the guy in the seat in front of me sit still for more than five seconds?
Seriously dude. Is there something wrong with you? I know these seats aren't the most comfortable seats in the world. I know we've been here for hours already. But please, don't do a full-on body slam every time you change positions. Please. You shake that thing so hard that my phone just fell off my table!

I just want to slee-hee-heep!
Dude. Stop moving. Every time you move, a shockwave travels through all the seats around you. You've woken me up five times now. Five times! Just sit still for a second or two and let me fall asleep. Please. I don't want to be a zombie on my first day in Thailand. Please... I'm begging you... I'm desperate...

I'm going to listen to the weirdest music this flight has to offer
I don't know why, but I'm awful at binge watching. And since sleeping isn't an option thanks to a certain someone, I might as well check some of the music in the library. I'm curious to see what the international section has to offer. What're the weirdest things I can find? Let's see... What's this obscure Asian band? Okay no. This is too weird. Too weird!

I can't wait to take these clothes off
I always feel so disgusting towards the end of an intercontinental flight. It feels like I've been wearing these clothes all my life. I don't remember what it's like to walk around without these old shoes. Hell, I don't even remember what walking around in a non-confined space feels like! I just want to take these clothes off, jump in a shower and put some fresh, clean clothes on. That's all I ask.

I can't wait to see what Thailand looks like!
Oh my god! We're here! I can't believe we're finally here! I can't wait to go out and explore Bangkok. I wonder what the city will look like. There are a lot of trees here near the airport, which is always a good sign. I guess Bangkok itself won't have that many trees though, but maybe Chiang Mai will be really green. I've heard so much about those jungles in the north already. I can't wait to see it all! I'm so excited, I would run out of this plane right now if I could!

So you see, even a relaxing plane trip makes my hyperactive brain go crazy with excitement. This time next week I'll probably be thinking a lot of things along these lines - but more excitedly because Cuba is my dream destination. And hopefully, there will be less annoying people in the seat in front of me and loads of Marvel movies for me to watch.

I like trains. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I like trains. It doesn't matter if it's the Ghan from Alice Springs to Adelaide in Australia, the midnight train to Moscow in Russia or the simple train to the airport here in the Netherlands, I just enjoy the ride. And yes, I'll admit it, like any other Dutch train traveller, I've spent quite a lot of time complaining about the insane ticket prices and delayed trains, but deep in my heart I can't be mad at trains. Riding a train is like taking a time-out and as my life became crazier and crazier over the past year the train became the one place where I could relax and think instead of worry. Now I already think too much as is (yay for giftedness!) and when I'm on a train, my brain likes to go a little crazy with excitement. It's the same in every country, but easiest to illustrate by taking you on a virtual trip I took many times in 2016, from Rotterdam in the west of the Netherlands to Venlo in the south!

I like trains
I get 2,5 hours to myself, on a train. I don't have to do anything, just stare out of the windows, maybe read a book. I'll be there in no time. Seriously, trains are great. They're fast and shiny and so relazing. I like this. No, I love this.

Please don't let me miss my connecting train
Dear Dutch train gods, please don't let this train be late. Please don't let this train get stuck behind a cargo train. Please don't let me miss my connecting train, I don't want to be stuck in Dordrecht for half an hour. I can't handle that stuff. I have to catch that train at... when did it leave again? And from which platform? Why do I always forget important stuff like this when I go to the south?

My country is so beautiful
Yeah okay, most of it is flat green meadows with some water here and there, but have you ever seen the sun rise over Hollandsch Diep while crossing the Moerdijkbrug by train? It's so freaking beautiful. This more than makes up for having to wake up before 7 am.

There are so freaking many geese in Brabant
Seriously Brabant, what's up with all the geese? I can hardly see the grass of the meadows, that's how many geese there are. I wonder exactly how many there are here. I'm gonna count. Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneight. That's a different bird. Not a goose. Teneleventwelvethirteenfourteenfifteen. Slow down train, I'm not done counting yet! Oh, never mind then...

My butt hurts. So bad.
This is pure pain from the waist down. Why did they put such hard seats in trains that literally go from one side of the country to the other? I can't sit anymore. Changing positions doesn't help. I don't know where to put my legs. This is no fun. And I'm not even in Eindhoven yet. Why am I doing this again?

I am in an empty train...
So everyone got off the train in Eindhoven. And now I'm all alone in this part of the train. Like fifty seats, all empty except for mine... This train does go to Venlo, right? What if it just goes to one of those places where they keep the trains, like a train garage thing to clean it or something, while I'm still here? No, this has to be the right train. Maybe people just don't go to the south in the morning?

How am I still not there yet?
I've been on this train since forever. I've been on this seat since forever. And I'm still not there yet. I guess I'm officially in the province of Limburg though. I'm not exactly sure, but the names of these places along the tracks do sound a bit southernish.

I'm going crazy on this train
I don't remember a time before this train. I am dead from the waist down. I have no idea how long I'm still going to be here. Probably for all eternity. Also, I'm hungry and I only have one cookie left. If I eat it now I won't have anything to eat on my way home... I'm eating it anyway before I lose my mind.

Why is a stop in Blerick even a thing?!
Seriously? No one ever gets off in Blerick, no one ever gets on. I can freaking see Venlo on the other side of the river, I can almost touch it and still we're making a stop here? Why?! Why wait for five minutes in freaking Blerick?! If I go running down the train tracks right now I'll beat the train to the station, no problem. Can we go now? We've been here for ages waiting at a deserted station! Please just bring me to Venlo now before my butt falls off from sitting on these horrible seats!

I like trains
Trains are awesome though. You get to see so many cool things, you don't have to do anything, just sit back and relax and before you know it you're literally on the other side of the country. Trains are the best.

And then I'd finally be in Venlo and I'd forget all about how much my butt hurt, how bored I'd been and how pointless a stop in Blerick is. That's how it's always been with me and trains: I love them, hate them, then love them again. I'll complain about them in public all day, but deep down inside I will always love travelling by train. I honestly can't wait for my next train trip, to Belgium at the end of this month!

I remember pretending to meditate when I was a kid. My friend and I would sit on the floor, then hold a contest: whoever said OOOOOOOOOOOOM the loudest would win. That was until she decided to yell PING, which I thought was so funny that I let her win that round. Of course none of this had anything to do with actual meditation. Yet still I've always believed I'd never meditate in my life because there was no way I could take it seriously. Every time I thought about meditating I ended up giggling at the memory of my friend yelling PING in my face. Not a good premise for meditation, so I never even tried. Until last March.
March was the month I spent every Monday and Tuesday night panicking and crying over internship. The situation was quite unhealthy, but I didn't know what I could do to make myself less panicky. Then Louise from Louise Chatters recommended me the app Calm, which is basically a meditation app. At this point in time I was too stressed to giggle or even smile, so with a serious mindset I started my first ever meditation session... and soon found out that my thoughts go crazy whenever I meditate. It went a little like this.

Guided meditation... No idea what that's supposed to be, but I'll give it a try then
Never heard of this stuff, but maybe it'll help... Okay, so it's a woman telling me what to do and how to do meditate? I think I can live with that. It can't be worse than someone yelling PING at me.

Why do I have to close my eyes when they're already closed?
Wasn't I meant to have my eyes closed from the start? Because that's what I did. Now what? Did I eff up already? Should I keep my eyes closed? Should I open them, then close them again? What do I do? I'm so confused already...

I'm so bad at meditating...
'Let go of all thoughts', seriously? I can't! I have a hyperactive brain, I am always thinking. About anything and everything. Like right now, now I'm thinking about how bad I am at meditating, which is a thought that proves itself by just being there. That's actually some deep shit. Am I supposed to think deep shit right now? The woman from the app doesn't say so. I guess that's a 'no' then...

MEDI MEDI MEDI MEDI MEDI MEDITATE
Those aren't the actual lyrics from that Imagine Dragons song, are they? Wasn't that song about levitating? That'd be so cool. Can't you levitate through meditation? Oh my god, maybe I'm levitating right now!

The muscles in my back are so relaxed and ... *face plant*
Seriously? It's possible to lose all muscle tension in your back and face plant the floor? What nonsense is this? I thought this was supposed to be fun and calming, not painful and frustrating!

I should blog about this
This totally deserves a blog post. '10 Thought While Meditating', even though I have a billion thoughts in reality. Maybe I should censor that post though. The amount of F-bombs I'm dropping now is absurdly high for an activity that should lead to inner peace.

My chin is itching
Oh my god. It's so itchy. I need to scratch it. Now. It's so bad. Am I allowed to move? I think I'm not... But I really really really need to scratch my chin. Could someone scratch my chin for me? Please? Anyone?

I'm so good at meditating!
I swear I haven't had a single thought in like, three minutes! I think. Shit. Now I'm thinking again. Now I can't call myself the queen of meditation anymore....

Is this over yet?
I'm getting so bored. My breathing is so boring. Not thinking is so boring. This was only supposed to be 10 minutes. It feels more like 10 years. Maybe I'll open my eyes in 2027. That would be interesting. Much more interesting than concentrating on my boring breathing.

I made it without yelling OOOOOOM or PING!
I did it! I actually did it! I survived! I meditated without shouting random nonsense! I'm a meditation champion! Go me!

And that's pretty much how every meditation session went. Afterwards I'd immediately fall asleep. Meditation did weird things to me. Notice the past tense? That's because I'm not meditating anymore. Partly because I enjoy having thoughts way too much, partly because life got out of control. But that's another story for another post. For now, let me just end this by saying that meditating actually did get me through one of the most difficult months of my life. Though I do have to admit I would've liked it better if I were allowed to shout OOOOOOOOOM at the end of each session.

Believe it or not, but I made it to the ripe old age of 20 without ever drinking a cup of coffee. The reason for this was simple: every time I tasted the stuff, I gagged, made myself a cup of tea instead, then felt guilty for cheating on tea, one of the loves of my life.
However, not too long ago I decided I wanted to give coffee a second chance. After all, everyone and everything deserve a second chance. Or in this case a third chance. And a fourth. And a fifth... So one day in Antwerp I ordered a cup of coffee. Okay, it wasn't entirely voluntary, but I was too curious to let the opportunity slide. Here's what I thought while trying to drink a cup of coffee for the first time. Spoiler: it didn't go too well...

Why doesn't this place sell hot chocolate?
Look, I understand that this place is Instagrammable. And I know that it has free wifi, which is a basic need for a millennial like me. I've also heard that coffee is a basic need too, but I beg to differ. I need some hot chocolate in my system. Why doesn't this place have hot chocolate. I swear I'll deduct brownie points for not having hot chocolate!

Indian Summer sounds interesting
Okay, so no hot chocolate. I guess this coffee drinking thing really is going to happen. But why all the weird and fancy names? Can't I just have coffee. Coffee coffee, no weirdness? I mean, what the eff is Indian Summer supposed to be? Okay it actually sounds exactly pretentious enough for me to order and exactly neutral enough not to send my tongue to its early death. I guess I'll give it a shot then.

Why is that cup bigger than my head?
This thing is huge! Like, huge huge! How is this coffee for one person? I swear a whole Indian village could drink from this cup! Bad Envy, that wasn't even a coffee pun, it was just bad. Just drink the damn stuff already, okay?

This is the most aesthetically pleasing place I've been to in ages
No I'm not avoiding drinking coffee at all by looking at the options for fancy Instagram posts. But look at this place, it's so cute and charming and all the other nice English adjectives I usually replace with 'awesome'! Except for that staircase. I do not like that much, even though it looks good in a picture. And I'm definitely not putting this whole drinking coffee thing off now by taking pictures. Nah ah. Absolutely not.

Shit, my whipped cream is starting to drip
Oh no, oh no, this is not good. Especially not considering that whipped cream is probably going to be the best part of this whole thing. Don't drip, please don't drip!
I'm getting a huge deja vu from that second date when I dumped a load of whipped cream in my hot chocolate and the stuff ended up everywhere. Why don't I learn from my mistakes?

Shit shit shit shit SHIT
So apparently yelling 'Don't drip!' doesn't stop whipped cream from dripping down the side of my cup. What do I do now? I need help...

Okay, crisis averted
I'll admit it, I don't look particularly charming licking the side of my cup, but at least the whipped cream isn't dripping anymore. I'm the best at crisis management. Not the best at drinking coffee, but I'll get to that later. I mean, who would even think of drinking coffee when you have a calamity such as dripping whipped cream on your hands?

Whipped cream is the best
You know, after crisis management has been completed, the most important thing is to make sure the crisis won't occur again in the foreseeable future. So it'd be wise for me to eat all the whipped cream now. Not just because it's extremely tasty and I'm scared to taste coffee. No, that has nothing to do with it. Just me being sensible, that's all.

OMG this stuff is bitter
Okay, I can't avoid drinking it any longer, which I totally wasn't doing by the way. I was just mentally preparing for the big moment. Trying coffee in three... two... one point five... one...
.
.
.
Why did I try this? Why did I think this was a good idea? This is not okay! NOT OKAY!

OMG this stuff is the best
But, wait. What is this? They always say stuff gets better and then it doesn't and I'm all disappointed, but... it's true for coffee? Let me try again. This is definitely getting better. And better. Oh my god this stuff is great. I apologize to all the coffee gods in the coffee heaven above for my blasphemous thoughts throughout the years. I can get used to this. Coffee is great. As long as I don't have to crisis manage whipped cream every time I drink it.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I met coffee. Since then, we've decided to take it slow. Slow meaning that we haven't seen each other since, but I'm pretty sure we'll pick things up right where we left them on that February day in Antwerp. How's your relationship with coffee? Don't be shy, it can't be worse than mine!

There are many things I'm not good at. Handling food is one of them. Eating fruit is another one. Smoothies seem to combine these two skills in a way that makes me question why I ever thought making smoothies was a good idea in the first place. Anyway, once I got the idea into my head, it had to happen. I was going to try and make some banana smoothies. Which, I soon noticed, came with this jumble of chaotic thoughts.

Is there any way I can eff this recipe up?
200ml of yogurt, a tablespoon of honey, 1,5 bananas, a little cinnamon and a little milk. Throw it into a bowl, mix it into mush and done? That's idiot-proof! Better yet, it's Envy-proof!

Stop escaping my clumsy fingers you demonic banana!
Okay banana, here's the deal: I'm chopping you up, then throw you into that bowl over there. Do not, I repeat, do not roll away once I've chopped you up. Do not roll away when I try to pick you up. And definitely do not roll off the table and fall onto the floor only to become useless to the entire universe!

Bananas falling on top of yogurt make a disgusting sound.
*Splush*
Ew. It does sound better than a banana falling onto the floor, but... ew.

That sound the mixer is making doesn't sound good
Am I doing something wrong? Why is it making this weird sound? It never does that when I make something else. What is this?! MOOOOOOOOOM! HELP ME!

PUREEEE THE BANANAAAAAS! ALL THE MUSHY MESSSSSS!
So the mixer's okay, which means I can absolutely destroy these bananas and mix all the yogurt and make it into the biggest smoothiest mess the world has ever seen. YASSS.

First thing I do when I move out is buying a blender
This is nice and all, but shouldn't my smoothie remain, like, in the bowl until I'm done? Seriously, there's yogurt on my freaking forehead. That's not good, is it?

Does this work with mango?
Banana is great and stuff, but does this work with other fruits? How about mango? Wait, I don't like mango. It tastes like puke. No wait, that's papaya. I always get the two mixed up. Sooo... mango. Would that work?

It looks so disgusting yet so beautiful
Done. It's a bowl full of masterpiece. A bad-looking masterpiece. But it's the smoothest smoothie I've ever seen. But it looks... disgusting...
I'm gonna drink it anyway.

How am I ever going to get this smoothie into a glass without turning the entire kitchen into a war zone?
So this bowl of puke-like stuff is huge, the glasses in this house are small and I'm probably the clumsiest person on this planet... Should I just pour it? I'm just gonna pour it. Not this quick though! Shit! Now it looks like a war zone anyway...

I'm definitely the Queen of Smoothies
This is actually pretty good. The bit that did end up in the glass, I mean. No wait, this is more than pretty good. This is fantastic. Just as good as those banana smoothies I drank all the time when I was in Costa Rica. And those had better, fresher bananas, which means... I'm the Queen of Smoothies! All hail my superior smoothie making skills!

Since I have decided to be healthy and stuff, I drink smoothies more often now. You'd think my thoughts would change after a while, but let me tell you this: my thoughts are this chaotic every single time!

In the busy weeks just before my summer vacation started, I did what I do best: I wasted my time reading Buzzfeed articles. It was my way of learning to cope with the fact that I'll never be a Buzzfeed writer. And as usual with Buzzfeed, I came across articles I didn't agree with. I came across articles I absolutely loved. But there was one article where I drew a line and said: "No. Just no. This needs to be rewritten. I am rewriting this Buzzfeed article right now!"
As you can tell I didn't rewrite it 'right now', partly because I was busy, mostly because I was lazy. But now I'm here and it's time to rewrite the article "The 24 Stages Of Going For A Run". I'm a runner. I have been a runner for the past twelve years. I will be a runner for many more years. I am very unfamiliar with theses "stages", which seem to be thoughts in my opinion. I don't have the thoughts listed in this article though. These are the thoughts I actually have while running.

1. I don't want to.
I should go for a run today... but I don't wnat to. I could pretend I have an injury. Didn't I just feel something in my leg? Never mind, that was just an itch.
Also can't pretend I don't know where my shoes are, they're on my feet. Hmmm... Maybe I should just go.

2. I'll just go for a short run. But I'll run extra fast.
Running 5k takes too long. I'll do 3k today. Then 5k next time. But I'll have to run extra fast today to make up for those 2k I won't do. A super fast short run should equal a slow long run, shouldn't it? Does that make sense? It does sound logical to me. I'm gonna go for it.

3. I'm so fast! So fast!
Look at me go! I'm so fast! I'm almost flying! Why am I not doing this professionally? I could take on those super fast African athletes right now. That would be awesome. Maybe I should go to track meetings again.
So fast!
4. That was too fast.
Too fast. Need air! Why did I think I could keep running at that pace for so long? What was I thinking?!

5. I'm so slow! So slow!
Maybe I can run a little slower. Wait, not this slow! Bad legs, I said slow, not snail's pace! Go faster! Normal pace! This is embarrassing...

6. What was it like to breathe like a normal person?
Back in the day, before I went on a run, I could breathe through my nose. Pure fresh air whenever I needed it. I was so good at breathing normally. Those were the days, I'm telling you. Those were the days...

7. This is not fun. Not at all.
Why am I doing this again? I could have been home, blogging or reading my book. Sounds nice. Sounds better than this.

8. Almost there. Let's go a little faster.
Okay Envy, only a couple of hundred meters now. Quit the snail's pace, force those legs to go faster. I don't care that you're tired, I don't care that your muscles ache and I certainly do not care that you don't feel like going faster anymore. You can cry and complain when you're home. You're going to run your ass off, understood?

9. I'm so mediocre! So mediocre!
You know, there are ten-year-olds who can run this fast. On the other hand, there are also lots of people who run a whole lot slower than me. I never win a race, but I never lose one either. Long live my mediocrity!

10. Thank god that's over...
Finally! I need to sit down. I need something to drink. I need a shower. Oh my god that was difficut. At least I can breathe again. Air, that's some good stuff. My god...

Note: Thought 1 and 2 are optional. Repeat thought 3 to 10 every other day on your runs.
If you wonder if running's really worth it after reading my thoughts, let me tell you this: you won't believe how fast I am when I have to get my laptop to join a Twitter chat!

Stay Awesome!

It's the night before Christmas and all through the house... my parents can hear my frustrated groans and hissed swear words. Christmas is tomorrow and that means one thing in the Fisher family: fancy clothes. We don't go to church, we don't do anything special, but if you're not wearing fancy clothes to Christmas dinner, no matter how normal the food is, you're in a world of trouble.
Thisyear I decided to wear my Ravenclaw tie to our small Christmas dinner. After all, what's fancier than a Hogwarts uniform? Let's face it, nothing can beat that. There's only one problem: I have no idea how to tie a tie...

Right after I bought my Ravenclaw tie during my Harry Potter Studio Tour, I realized I had a wonderful tie, but no idea how to tie it... Iasked every single guy I know if they knew how to tie a tie. All I got was blank stares. My dad was clueless, my friends thought I'd finally lost my marbles, even my awesome Granddad was clueless. Lucky for me, I bumped into my neighbour one day and he knew exactly how to tie a tie.
I was over the moon. It looked so awesome, even muggles liked it. But then things changed. Shortly before writing this post, the knot in my tie somehow shifted. When I wore it, it looked just a little off...
With Christmas only hours away, I decided to try tying it myself. Step by difficult step...

Step 1: Look at the chart my Granddad gave me
How about that: my 83 year old Granddad who only speaks Dutch with a thick local accent has a chart that's from top to bottom in English!
...
I don't know how to read this thing. Left to right, right? Oh great, this thing shows multiple ways to tie a tie. It even has a bowtie turotial. I'm impressed. Also a little intimidated. Let's just get this thing going then...

Step 2: Put the tie around your neck
Okay, that's easy enough. Around my neck, just like that. But which end of the tie should be longer. Should they be the same length? Why doesn't my chart tell me? Granddad, your chart ain't helping right now!

Step 3: Fold the longer part over the short - twice
Apparently one end should be longer than the other one. Which end though? The fat end? The skinny end? I don't think that's how I should call it, but you know what I mean. I'm going to go with the fat end, wrap it around the other and... do it twice, right?
Right. Twice. I have this situation under control. Totally.

Step 4: Pull the longer part through some opening you should have made
So now the fat end goes up and through something and done! Not done? No, not done. I can't find the opening where I should pull it through. There is no way I can get this end through anything. There is no place to put it! God, that's starting to sound very wrong in my head...
Let me try again. Up and through... not here. Nope, not like that... Maybe I should... Great, I'm stuck.

Step 5: Get stuck
Yeah. Okay. I don't know what I did, but apparently I shouldn't have done it. My chart says nothing about hands getting stuck in ties...

Step 6: Try to fix things
Deep breaths, Envy, you can do this. Everything is under control. There is not reason why this won't work out, just try again. I have no idea how I got things to get so messed up, but I can save this. It's not Christmas just yet, let me try again.

Step 7: Get stuck again
And... stuck again! Seriously? Seriously, Ravenclaw tie? Why are you doing this to me?! I love you and you, you just let me down like this! Now I understand why the Dutch word for tie translates to 'noose tie'. This thing is out to kill me.

Step 8: Throw the tie in frustration on the floor
Done! I am done with you!

Step 9: Give up and wear it as a head band instead
Fancy shmancy Christmas dinner? I'll just go like this, wear my Marvel shirt with it and face the music.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Stay Awesome!

PS. While taking pictures for this post, I actually found out how to tie a tie! So don't worry about my, I'll be fine this Christmas :)

Dear glasses,
We've been together since December 2011. I remember the first time I saw you very well. I feel head over heels in love with you. Yet here we are, four years later, and it's time to say goodbye.

To be perfectly honest, I'm glad it's over between us. Ever since my dad stepped on you, things haven't been the same. Multiple times you almost broke and the last couple of weeks I didn't dare fold you (if that's how you say it, probably not) in case you'd break for good. But let's face it, things have been going downhill for a long time. You were always lost. Okay, I admit that it was my mistake that I lost you in my wardrobe. I shouldn't have left you there when I went downstairs to get a cookie. That was my fault. But that time you fell behind a pile of towels while I was in the shower? Or that time I took a nap and you disappeared under the couch? That was your fault, 100% your fault.
And don't get me started on all those times when you fogged up in the winter, or even when it was 20 degrees Celsius outside and I tried to drink tea. The exact opposite bugged me too: when I needed you to fog up in the middle of summer, you wouldn't. How was I supposed to clean you on those days if you wouldn't fog up? Apart from that, would it kill you to stay clean for a second? These last few months no one has been able to clean you. Not even my mom and she can get anything clean!
Seriously, glasses, I know I'm not an easy person, but sometimes you seemed yo go out of your way to annoy me. Every time I put my headphones on, you seemed to be trying to enter my skull. The pain you caused me almost drove me crazy. Taking a nap or just lying down on the couch while watching tv was also impossible because of you. I'm not an easy person, but you weren't easy either. Life together was no walk in the park...

But in the end, my dear glasses, I loved you for most of those four years we spent together. We've seen some amazing places. You've enabled me to see the sun rise over Ayer's Rock and Machu Picchu, you've helped me to see cars coming at me from all sides on my driving exam and you made me see the wonderful grades I graduated high school with.
You've helped me see for four years. That's a long time and that's why I forgive you for all your highly annoying flaws. Time to pass the baton to these awesome guys.

Don't be a stranger, take care and...
Stay Awesome!

Life is a weird roller coaster full of craziness, I think we all agree to that. The silliest little things can change everything and our friends can make our lives revolve around the most ridiculous things.
I, for one, am still called 'the drowning otter' because of a little accident I had over two years ago. I'm also greeted with a simple 'HODOR' and my oldest friends know me as the half-American. After that, I thought I'd be prepared for whatever kinds of craziness college would throw at me.
Fandoms, travelling and writing had been the centre of my world, piece of cake to handle. But then something unexpected happened, something I didn't know how to handle, and I suddenly found myself in a situation where my whole life revolved around... a revolving door.

Not if your name is Envy...

After our Peru trip my Dad still had two more weeks of his vacation left. He grabbed our stuff, grabbed my Mom, grabbed me, threw it all in the car and drove to France. We went to the same campground as last year, but found out it had changed. Or maybe I should say that the crowd on the campground had changed. Last year we were surrounded by friendly Germans, funny Frenchmen and quiet but nice Dutch people. This year... let's just say it was quite different. In a way it was worth it. Never before have I seen such a weird crowd on a single campground. With a little pride I can now present you: Envy's Guide to European Campers in their Natural Habitat. It's even got illustrations!

The Screamers
Imagine you wake up in the middle of the night. You know it's cold and dark outside, but you have to pee right now or you sleeping bag will smell like pee for the rest of your vacation. So you make your way out of your tent, through the dark to the sanitary building.
All of a sudden you hear a giggle coming out of nowhere. After a few seconds of panicky thoughts about ghost stories, you hear a voice. Just a normal voice telling a story about a cat, a movie, doesn't matter what. First of all it's a relief - no ghosts around here - but then you realize not only you, but everyone on the campground can enjoy this delightful story.

Some people just don't understand that a tent is not a house. Everyone can hear them tell their story. Not only awkward for them, but also for the ones accidentaly listening. I don't know about you, but I don't want to know what a stranger did to their girlfriend last night, whether or not their mom walked in and how she did or did not react. I just don't want to know. But unless I walk around the campground with earplugs I will hear certain things I didn't want to know. These people aren't just talking, they're screaming. Screaming things I'd rather not know. I've heard everything this summer from a trip to India to the proper way to raise a chihuahua. And some details about some relationships that have scarred me for life...

The Grill Masters
They don't touch an oven in months. If possible, they avoid the kitchen for a whole year. In case of emergency it's in, raid the fridge and out again. But as soon as they jump out of their car onto the campground, they become self-proclaimed master chefs, the absolute masters of the grill, barbecue gods. They race to the supermarket to buy enough meat to feed the entire population of West Africa. Everything is thrown on the barbeque - and instantly incinerated.
These people are easy to find on the campground: just follow the smoke. Nine out of ten times you'll find a man standing behind the barbeque (if you can see him through the smoke), boasting about his great cooking skills. His wife won't complain about burned sausages, she's just glad she doesn't have to cook on her vacation. The kids won't complain either; after all Mommy has promised them they'll go to McDonald's tomorrow if they eat their ashy steaks. And so the man continues to throw meat into the roaring flames, making sure that everyone can see and smell that he is the absolute best cook on the campground.

The Fashionistas
When I go camping I don't really care what I'm wearing. You can see me walking to the toilets in brown sweat pants and a Batman sweater all day. I'm already walking around with toilet paper under my arm, how much worse can it get? Besides, everyone looks like that, nobody cares. Until the fashionistas arrive at the campground... Suddenly every day turns into a fashion show. Every piece of clothing you wear will be judged. And these girls, or guys in some rare cases, never take a break from being judgemental.
On my last camping trip I had the opportunity to observe two fashionistas from up close. I even counted the number of times they changed clothes: three to six times a day (putting on pj's before going to bed doesn't count in this observation). Their day revolves around clothes and judging others. They spend most of their day hanging out near the toilets, talking about how stupid everyone looks. They're almost as easy to spot as the people who think a campfire and a barbeque are the same thing. The girls are extremely thin and they all wear fashionable summer clothes - even when it's way too cold for dresses and short skirts. The guys have at least seven different caps or pairs of sunglasses. None of these people are wearing shoes fit for walking in a city, let alone on a campground. Worst of all: they're hypocrites. Judging people for wearing a Batman sweater? Rather not, but if you must, don't do it while you are wearing a Sesame Street sweater yourself. That's a tad hypocrite. My advise: if you're not one of them, stay away from them. Even if that means you have to walk an extra mile to the other sanitary building on the other end of the campground.

The Internet Addicts
These people don't need an explanation. You find them in high places - literally. I've seen them in trees, on top of RVs, on top of table tennis tables, just about everywhere. They will do anything for reception, spend huge parts of their day looking for it. But believe me, find yourself a pair of these and you won't need the internet for your entertainment.

Today I went to my final Latin class. For six years I've studied a language that no one speaks, a language that is annoyingly complex and freakishly weird (what language needs seven different verbs that all mean 'to kill'?! Or a word for elegant feet?!).
I am going to miss those classes. I've always liked Latin, saw it as a puzzle I had to solve. There were times when I was less than amused by a certain poem I had to translate.  But when I look back on the last six years, Latin was definitely my favorite subject. I'm also quite good at it. When most people hear that, they ask me stuff like: 'How do you say 'I want to be a flying pig when I grow up' in Latin?'. I always give them the same answer: 'No idea.'

Some actual information
The focus of my Latin classes was on translating, speaking Latin was never part of the curriculum. Why? Because it's way to hard. Romans like to throw all their words into a blender, blend them, take a quick look to see if their sentence-smoothies are confusing enough already and when they are, blend them some more just to make sure. No worries though, they've got a complex system of cases to make sense of their nonsense: the subject is in the nominativus, the genitivus is used for property and ownership stuff (excuse my lack of Englishness today), the indirect object is in the dativus and the object in the accusativus. Everything else is in the ablativus. To make it more confusing: every noun has another way of changing when it's in another case and prepositions and verbs can have influence on the case, but not always.
What's more? Oh right, almost forgot about that: Romans hate subjects, so they presume you know who or what is the subject when you see the end of the finite verb. So amas means 'you love', but amat means 'he loves'. And then, because the Romans have fifty thousend different tenses in present, past and future, verbs can change even more. So amavit means 'he loved', but then amabit means 'he will love'. Good thing the Romans didn't have computers; a typo would have been a downright disaster.

And you're still asking me if I can speak Latin? Okay, okay, I speak a little Latin. Four sentences to be exact. And they aren't exactly helpful either...

'Habeo famem'
Habeo: to have, first person, present tense, 'I have'
Famem: accusativus of the word fames, meaining 'hunger'
In correct English: I am hungry

If you ever find yourself in the streets of Ancient Rome, hungry after a really good gladiator fight but without a clue of where to get yourself some food, you could tell people you're hungry by saying 'habeo famem'.
Warning: though there were some nice lads who called themselves emperors and handed out bread to the hungry and the poor, there were also some assholes who got to be emperors. Be careful when you say 'habeo famem'; it might get you some food, it might get you killed by annoyed emperors and no matter who the actual emperor is at that moment, there's always a chance of getting killed by other Romans who just don't like your hungry ass.

'Mortuusne es?'
Mortuus: 'dead'
Ne: shows us we're dealing with a question, otherwise totally useless
Es: to be, second person, present tense, 'you are'
In correct English: Are you dead?

Apparently, this is what they ask the pope when the poor guy dies in his sleep, chokes on his food, gets attacked by the stubborn pigeons of Rome or whatever. If the pope dies, someone, probably a cardinal (I wasn't paying attention when this was told), picks him up or shakes the old guy a little or dangles him from one of the balconies of the Vatican and asks: 'Mortuusne es?'
If the pope responds, he's obviously not dead. If the pope doesn't respond, he is dead and the people of the Vatican can be proud of themselves for asking a dead person in Latin if he was dead.

'Jupiter in templo sedet'
Jupiter: Roman version of Zeus
in templo: in the temple (yeah, sometimes it's as easy as that)
sedet: to sit, thrid person, present tense, 'sits'
In correct English: Jupiter sits in the temple.

The most useless sentence I've ever learned is also the one I'll never forget. It was the first sentence I ever translated. Jupiter sits in the temple. Good for Jupiter. Now can we get on to the more interesting things? Nope, first we have to translate five more sentences telling me that Jupiter sits next to Juno and he has a scepter... Halfway through my first Latin class, I was bored to death with Jupiter. Six years later, I still am.

'Cucurbitam describe!'
Cucurbitam: accusativus of cucurbita, meaning 'pumpkin'
Describe: imperative of describere, meaning 'to draw'
In correct English: Draw a pumpkin!

The silliest sentence I translated must be this one. Draw a pumpkin!
There's a story behind it, though. Once upon a time in Ancient Rome, there was an emperor who had his head up his ass and thought he was the greatest architect of all times. He forgot about the truly great architect Apollodorus, who had been the most important architect in Roman Europe when Trajanus was emperor. So the empreror, Hadrian (yes, the guy from the wall), showed Apollodorus his blueprints, which weren't actual blueprints back then, but as I said, my English isn't at it's best today.
Apollodorus took a look and wasn't impressed. Not at all. Apollodorus was insulted by the arrogance of Hadrian and said to the emperor: 'You know nothing about architecture! Cucurbitam describe! Draw a pumpkin!'
BURN! Nah, not really, because Hadrian felt threatened by Apollodorus and had him killed. And then they lived happily ever after. Except Apollodorus of course.

Can you curse in Latin, Envy?
No. Just no. I can command people to draw a pumpkin. I can tell them I'm hungry. I can ask them if they're dead. I can even tell you in which temple Jupiter likes to sit on his ass and argues with his wife and be proud of his scepter (that sounded wrong, but I didn't mean it that way. Honestly, I didn't. Maybe I read too much Catullus poems). But that's it. I'm sorry, but that 's it.

Vale!
Your blogger Invidia Piscator
Muahaha, see what I did there? That's right, I said goodbye in Latin and translated my own name to Latin. So maybe I can curse in Latin. You'll never know ;)

In the short 17 years of my life, I've camped on three continents: North America, Australia (or Oceania if that's what makes you happy) and ofcourse my own continent, Europe.
Of all three, Europe is the one that has caused me the most trouble. Yes, I am bored with my own continent, but that's not the reason why camping here puts me through so much trouble. So I present you: Envy's list of awful things on European campgrounds.

The Wild Animals

I was eight when I camped in the US. We were on a campground near the Grand Canyon and at night I could hear the coyotes howl. They howled loud, it sounded as if they had surrounded our tent.
I was sixteen when I camped in the Australian Outback. I woke up at night to hear something creep between our swags. The Chinese next to me woke up and began talking to his fiancee in rapid Kantonese. The only word I understood was 'Dingo!'
But the thing is: you expect these things when you go camping there. You know about the coyotes and dingoes. But in Europe, the most dangerous animal you can encounter is the campgroundowner's cat. Or at least, that's what it feels like (especially the Dutch tend to forget that the wolf has made its comeback in the Netherlands, or that bears are still living in the Pyrenees).
You don't expect 'dangerous' wild animals that might bite you, not in the safe heaven called Europe. So what happens if your tent almost gets washed away in a storm and you wake up to the sounds of a fox trying to enter your tent? You scream, fall of your air mattress and shake the entire tent until the fox leaves. That's how we handle unexpected encounters the Envy-style.

The Sanitary Buildings

I'll never forget that my tour guide in the Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia, told me to check underneath the toilet seat for redbacks if I had to go to the toilet.
No such things in Europe. Cobwebs: yes. Dangerous spiders: no. Snails: everywhere. Sometimes there were snails on the bathroom walls. At least they're not dangerous, only gross. But as disgusting as that is, it's not the big problem with European sanitary buildings on campgrounds.
Then what ís the problem? They're dirty. More often than not the toilet hasn't been flushed. Don't even ask when it was cleaned for the last time, just don't. And in the really bad cases, people crap literally on the toilet seat and just leave it there. It's so disgusting.
Yes, I've seen this in Australia and the US too, but not half as often as in Europe.
And to increase the fun of going to the toilet, the French have invented those toilets which aren't much more than a hole in the ground. Missed the hole? No problem, there's a garden hose to wash it away- if you're lucky. Otherwise: run and don't look back.

The Language Barriers

With Dutch language education at a miserably low level, camping in Europe isn't as easy as it sounds. In Australia and the US English is enough, you're good to go wherever you want. But Europe is a patchwork of languages. Going to France? Make sure you speak French. Going to Germany? Better learn some German.
But the worst of it is not being able to communicate with your neigbors. Asking them to be quiet will have to be done in their language. English isn't an option, unless you start dropping F-bombs, which will only make things worse.

The Pink Toilet Paper

Sometimes you're at a campground that doesn't provide toilet paper and you'll have to get your own. Which isn't a problem. Just get the cheapest toilet paper available from the supermarket. And then you see that the cheapest toilet paper is pink.

Going to the toilet just got at least a hundred times worse. Walking to the sanitary building with toilet paper under your arm is like screaming: 'Look at me, I'm a big girl, I'm going to pee and poop all by myself already!'
The same thing with pink toilet paper is like screaming: 'Look at me, I'm going to have a Disney Princess Tea Party on the crapper!'
I can stand the noisy neigbors, I will survive the animals and dirty sanitary building. But PINK toilet paper? That's it, Europe, you've crossed a line. I'm out.
