Lost in Translation

There is a big part of me that really wants to start this blog post with some double entendre (yay, for being dirty-minded!), but I have decided to keep things nice and chirpy today. You see, things are looking up for me at the moment. I still don't know where my life is going, but at least I'm feeling much better. On the rare moments when I do sink back into a black pit of sadness, people like Becky from The Owlet save me by, for example, tagging me in the Self Love Tag, which is actually about appreciating yourself. Even though I'd told myself I wouldn't do tags anymore, but I couldn't say 'no' to this one; I needed some positivity.
It was a little difficult tag for me to write though. Apart from the name that makes me think of different things, I can't help but singing 'YOU SHOULD GO AND LOVE YOURSELF' while writing this post (yes, all caps were necessary because I only have one volume on the rare occasion that I sing and that's loud). Anyway, I feel like I'm getting way of topic, so I'll just get to listing the rules and answering some questions.

The Rules:
1. Answer all the questions honestly (damn, there goes my plan of making it all up)
2. Tag five people who you want to bring a bit of happiness to (can't I bring them pizza instead?)

What is something that is getting you down at the moment?
The way my ex-boyfriend and I split up - over text, without giving ourselves the chance to talk our problems out. I know that his mental health made it difficult to be in a relationship and I was breaking down mentally as well, but the way we ended it was just... wrong. I regret that breakup in every single way and would change it if I could. I hate knowing I made a mistake I can't fix right now.

What is something that makes you happy?
Daydreaming makes me so happy. I love to revisit places like Edinburgh and Antwerp while sitting on the couch with a cup of tea on rainy days, or plan future trips in the garden with travel brochures all around me. Daydreams are where my blog posts, novel ideas and plans for the future come from.

Name 3 guilty pleasures!
1) Music by De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig. I started listening ironically, as a true hipster, but ended up actually liking bits and pieces...
2) Trash tv such as Wicked Tuna. Brainless binge watching at its best.
3) Fake ghost hunting videos on YouTube. Pure genius to see people pretend they saw a ghost while they clearly didn't and can't act.

What is something about yourself you'd like to improve on?
I'd love to spend less time thinking about things I can't change. I spend too much time thinking and overanalyzing my feelings. The latter is a result of therapy and will probably come to an end some time in the future, but for now it's really frustrating to know that your mind is messing with you, yet you can't make it stop quite yet.

When was the last time you belly laughed?
I used to do that a lot in October, but it's become a lot less frequent since then. Last time was exactly one week ago. I was watching the Dutch version of Ink Master and one of the tattoo artists was wearing a tiny sun hat. I don't know why, but grown men in floppy hats make me laugh out loud for ages. Every time this guy was on screen I burst out laughing and I'm not ashamed to admit that I fell off my chair and rolled over the floor laughing.

What is your biggest insecurity/fear?
My biggest fear is that I'll never find someone to share my life with. I'm a hopeless romantic pretending to be a pessimistic cynic, so there's that... True love and all that ish, my inferiority complex keeps telling me I'm not good enough for that and I'll never find it.

Name a song that always cheers you up when you're down.
Recently that's been Sterrenstof by De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig. Before that it was a song called Free by Emeli Sandé. Half Moon Bay by Train always did the trick when I was in high school. I could go on like this for a while, hahaha.

Name 3 things you like about yourself
1) My creativity; I don't think I'd be writing this if I didn't have that. It's made life much more fun.
2) My desire to make a difference in this world; I don't know how to actually make that difference, but I can work on that.
3) My hair; all my friends hated my hair when I was growing up, but I quite like it now that I'm grown-up and don't care about high school friends' opinions.

What is an achievement that has made you proud of yourself this year?
I finally saved enough money to be able to become an investor. I've been working hard for the past couple of years to save up for trips to the other side of the world. I had to put travelling on the backburner because of college trouble, so the money was just there, not being used. Now I invest in small businesses in Cambodia, Ghana and Colombia. It makes me proud to see that I'm financially stable enough to be an investor and help people in faraway countries with my savings.

Tell us your happiest memory.
Most of my happiest memories took place in Novato, California. Looking back on them now, it's difficult to pick just one, but walking to the pool with my friends and seeing a group of deer cross the street a few meters away is a memory that always makes me happy. It's a small but special one.

So there you have it. A little happiness, a tiny bit of sadness, and one rule left to follow: I hereby tag Kanra, Kathie K, Jerneja, The Girl with an Accent and Louise. Now you go and love yourself! (And yes you may take that whichever way you want.)

Lately I've been obsessed with words, even more than usual. I learn new words in Urdu and German while I rediscover English words that I haven't heard since I was 11. I've looked back at the words that hurt me and I hope that my way with words will shape my future.
The Text Tag matches my current mindset perfectly. I was lucky enough to be tagged for it by not just one, but two amazing bloggers: Little Robin from Little Teen's Blog and Elsie Anonymous. Thank you ladies for tagging me, I'll go answer your questions right away!

What is your favorite letter of the alphabet?
It's not just the first letter of my real name, you can also make this letter with your hands. Sort of. Kind of. Not really. But the idea is cool.

What are three words that you love?
Three words, three different languages. I couldn't help myself. I chose these words because of the way they sound, not because of what they mean. These words are the words I could say all day without ever growing tired of them.
I think we all know what 'pope' means. Zalzala means earthquake and sounds very pretty for something that destroys everything. Dompelpomp is a device for cleaning your pond without killing your fish. The thing itself is lame but the word sounds nice.

What are three words that you hate?
These words... My god, I hate them so bad. I hate pineapple because it doesn't make any sense. It's 'ananas' in almost every language, but in English it's suddenly 'pineapple'. Where is the logic in that?!
Career is a word I hate because I can't pronounce it properly. My tongue is probably too fat to do it. It always comes out as 'caweer' or 'careew'. Stupid word.
The last word I hate is from my own language and it means 'bucket'. I have no idea why, but I don't like the word 'emmer' at all. Something about it is just not quite right.

If you were to create a word, what would it be and what would it describe?
I'm very bad at creating new words. My best friend is much better at it. I think he came up with my favorite home made word. Okay, my second favorite, but my favorite is an insult and that's not nice. So the one I'll go for is 'okayish'. It's perfect for when something is not quite okay, but it's still too good to say 'meh'. That's when things are okayish.

What are your three favorite punctuation marks?
I love making huge extravagant question and exclamation marks. In 11th grade I used to spent most of my math tests making beautiful question marks on my asnwer sheet whenever I had no idea what I was supposed to do.
The period, well, it's the bas of almost all punctuation marks and deserves some respect, don't you think?

What are your three favorite fonts?
I'm not a huge dan of fonts to be honest. I prefer handwriting over fonts. My favorite handwriting is that of my friend Jasmina, my mom's and my own (glad that didn't sound arrogant at all).

What's a word/words that you think is often misunderstood and gets used in the wrong context?
(Question by Little Robin)
Literally. I think this is literally the most misused word in the English language. Whenever people say they are "literally dead", I cringe. I see you laughing, I hear you talking, unless you're a zombie you're not literally dead right now!

If you could remove one letter from the alphabet, which one would it be and why?
(Question by Elsie Anonymous)
Okay, I admit that the letter X looks pretty bad ass. But do we actually need it? It's just a combination of a normal K and a normal S and yes, it does make a word look a whole lot fancier, but it's still completely unnecessary. It's an okayish letter at best.

As tags usually go, I´m supposed to pass it on. Here are the blog buddies I´d like to see answer these questions:
Jerneja from Sparkly Kid
Kathie K from A Sea Change
Kanra Khan from The Lunar Descent
Muskan from Just Another Blog-Girl

My extra question for you: Which do you prefer, handwritten or typed notes?

Literally months ago Dian from The Happy Candle nominated me for the Liebster Award. I wasn't sure if I was going to accept, because I've done a little too many Liebster Award posts throughout the years. But then I looked at Dian's post and I wasso impressed by the creative twist she'd given it that I couldn't help but accept. One of the other people who'd been nominated (back then known as Neal Kind) also did something very creative, so I felt like I couldn't stay behind. That's why I drew my answers instead of writing them down. Thank you, Dian, for nominating me and making the Liebster Award a little more awesome!

What makes you smile?
I recently posted about all the little things in life that make me smile. Drawing them all would have been a huge task, so I only drew the butterfly, because they're beautiful and fun to draw

What do you enjoy more - rain or snow?
Snow. Without a doubt. Can't make rain angles or rain men or have a rainball fight, can you?

If you could be any age for a week, what would it be?
I'm quite happy being 18 years old, but I'd like to be four again. I was the queen of the sandbox back in kindergarten and it was the only time in my life where I was actually very popular.

Which do you use more often - the dictionary or the thesaurus?
Dictionary, but mostly because I am Dutch, write my blog posts in English, study German and learn Spanish on my days off. It happens very often that I stumble across a word that I don't know, so I have to look it up in the dictionary to understand what I'm reading.

What are five words you would use to describe yourself?
Mostly words my friends use to describe me, though

If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would it be?

Sense of smell. I live literally half a mile away from a big dairy farm, my hometown is surrounded by meadows full of cows and every spring it smells terrible. I wouldn't miss that.
I had no idea how to draw this. I admit that I drew myself as the Hulk once, but drawing myself as Voldemort... no thanks.

Which one represents you more - polka dots or stripes?
I actually have no idea, but if I look at my wardrobe I see at least five shirts with strips, a dress and a pair of shorts, but absolutely nothing with polka dots.

I am known for my...
Insecurity and indecisiveness. I should also be known for my laziness when it comes to drawing hands...

Do you prefer numbers or letters?
What can I say? I am a writer after all.

What was the last lie you told?
"I'watched only one episode of Game of Thrones today!"
I watched three episodes. Don't tell my mom. She has a strict one-episode-a-day rule.

What is your favorite quote?
Source
Okay, I didn't make that one. I got a little tired :P

And that's it for this Liebster Award. As you might have noticed in the title of this post, I'm not planning on doing more of these tags since I've done five or six of them over the past two years :)

Stay Awesome!

It's almost summer vacation, which means I'm busy studying for finals (or pretending to be studying). I don't have much time to write blog posts that are a little more interesting than a list of ways I'm wasting valuable study time. I really needed a quick and easy post idea, but was completely inspirationless. Luckily I got nominated for The Versatile Blogger Award by F from The Fence of Stars, thank you F!
The rules:
1. Thank the person who nominated you. Check
2. Share seven random facts about yourself and answer the challenge. Will do
3. Nominate 5 bloggers (or more) who you think fit the definition of 'versatile' Keep reading for that
4. Make up a new challenge. I think I'm going to cheat a little
5. Create your own 'Versatile Blogger Award Picture' and it it to your post. In case you don't know about my designing skills, let me clear this up: I did not make that picture, I'm suffering from laziness.

I have to share seven random facts about myself with you guys, which is never a problem for me until I actually have to come up with seven random facts. When I try to think of anything interesting, I suddenly seem like the most boring person on earth, but I'll give it a shot.

1. I did not know what the word 'versatile' meant until I got nominated for this award. I'm Dutch, I can't help it. I seriously texted a friend to figure out what kind of nomination I'd received XD
2. I've got an awesome granddad who calls himself Carl when he goes to Germany, even though his name is not Carl.
3. I write all my blog posts by hand before I write them on Blogger, because the internet is too distracting when I try to write a post directly on Blogger.
4. A few weeks ago I chased a seagull at college so I could take a picture of it and send it to a friend. All the seniors now think I'm a retard.
5. When I was a kid, I thought I'd turn into a mermaid if I spent enough time in the pool.
6. I listen to Train when I'm happy and to Taylor Swift when I'm unhappy. There's been a little too much Taylor on my radio lately though...
7. I want one of those bags with a map of the world on it that come with a marker, so you can color the countries you've visited. Might be a good birthday present.

Now comes my favorite part of this post, because F has a great challenge: Share 7 things you want to do (or places you want to visit) before you die! I'm always making lists of places I want to go, so I'll share seven places I want to visit before I die :)

Source
Tokyo
A left-over dream from my otaku-phase. About a year before I started blogging, I became extremely interested in manga. I got myself a subscription on a Japan oriented magazine, but my interests quickly shifted from manga to Japanese culture and urban legends. One day I want to visit Tokyo and see all the Japanese quirks for myself. And while I'm there, I want to go to Mount Fuji and see at least one blossoming cherry tree. I'm a sucker for Japanese clichés. I've heard that it's an expensive country, but visiting it is too high on my wish list to care about that.

Egypt
Source
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with mummies. I even cut out newspaper articles about newly discovered mummies. The mummy obsession led to an interest in pyramids, hieroglyphs and Egyptian mythology. Ever since then I've wanted to see the pyramids, the Sfinx and all the other famous sights. I've seen some replicas in Vegas and Legoland, which was cool, but I don't think it can beat the real deal.
A few years ago I came close to convincing my dad to take me to Egypt, but then things went a little crazy and the situation still isn't stable enough according to my dad. I don't mind waiting a few more years though, there are lots of other awesome places I want to see too.

Source
Rio de Janeiro
The World Cup of 2014 and the upcoming Olympics have had some influence on my choice for Rio de Janeiro. last summer Dutch TV was flooded with commercials for Brazil. I can't deny that Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city. It has its dangers, but also its very own, very unique image and culture. If I ever get there, I want to go up to that ginormous Jesus statue. There's something mind blowing about that statue, it attracts me like a magnet, even though I'm not religious at all. Can't wait to be there one day.
Source

Croatia
In case you didn't know yet: some Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in Croatia. Do you need any other reason to visit a country? Wait, you do? Just take a look at this picture, I'll bet that'll convince you of Croatia's awesomeness. Isn't that place beautiful? (It's King's Landing by the way, or Dubrovnik for people who don't like Game of Thrones).

Vietnam
Source
I wrote a paper on Vietnam when I was in 6th grade and, as it goes with me and papers on faraway places, I've wanted to visit the country ever since. It also helps a lot that there's a place in Rotterdam that sells the best Vietnamese egg rolls ever. Seriously though, to me Vietnam has the perfect combination of tropical climate, exotic culture and history.
My parents went to Vietnam a few years before I was born. They still tell me all these amazing stories. The idea of going there all by myself scares me, but I'd love to see the country and come back with some great stories of my own.

Boston
Source
I've been to the US so many times, but I've never been to the East Coast. No wait, that's not true. I went to the East Coast with my parents when I was about two years olds. I didn't do much more than sleep, eat and talk toddler-nonsense, but if I take a look at the pictures I seem to be enjoying myself.
In a few years I'll be able to rent a car and go on a roadtrip. Boston will be one of the first places I'll visit, once again because of a story my parents told me: my dad was running the Boston Marathon when he got so hungry during the race that he stole a banana from a random dude in the crowd.

Malta
I almost booked a last-minute trip to this island in the Mediterranean Sea last January. I was supposed to have a week off and I really wanted to get the most out of it. In the end the whole getting a week off thing didn't happen, but I still want to go to Malta. Any sunny island with Roman ruins is awesome.

Those are the seven places I want to visit before I die. I know I'm supposed to come up with a new challenge, but I love this challenge so much that I'd like to challenge these five bloggers to do the same thing!

Over the past few years I've learned a lot. One of those things is that I'm not exactly average or common. I have yet to meet another eighteen year old girl who only falls for fictional guys, drinks responsibly and has the next five years of her life completely mapped out.
However, every time I tell someone that I'm not exactly your typical teenage girl, they snort and say: 'Yeah right.' So after seeing this tag over at Bryleigh's blog, I decided to prove once and for all that I'm no common teenage girl. How am I going to prove that? By doing the Common Teenage Girl Tag.

1: Favorite Starbucks drink?
Contrary to popular belief at my old high school, I'm not a big fan of Starbucks. I've been to Starbucks five times in just as many years. The last time was when I was in Vienna and I didn't even order a drink (I just used their bathroom and ate a pastry I bought at some other place). When I do order a drink at Starbucks it's usually hot chocolate.

2. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
Ten minutes at most. I grab a pair of jeans, a shirt, sweater or tank top, put it on, brush my hair and teeth and ta-da: I'm done.

3. How many selfies do you take on a daily basis?
On a daily basis? Hold on a second, I have to calculate that.
Sometimes I take selfies because I need a profile picture for my Blogger and Twitter account. I change those approximately twice a year, but I have to take a series of at least ten selfies, because I think they all suck and that way I can pick the best out of twelve. So that's 24 selfies, then the 7 I take throughout the year when I'm bored out of my mind, and the 9 I take on vacation... Add it all up... that's 40 a year, divided by 365 brings me to 0.1095890411 selfies on a daily basis.

4. How many IG followers and pics do you have?
It took me three minutes to figure out that IG stands for Instagram (it does, right?). I don't even have an account and I don't see a reason to make one.

5. Do you ever say LOL or OMG out loud?
I have, in the distant past of 2011, said OMG out loud once. Not as Oh-Em-Gee though, more like some sort of alien word. I could totally picture an alien growling "omgggggggg" at me during an invasion. The reason I said this was that a boy called Jasper started pronouncing it this way, so I asked: "Why does Jasper say OMG all the time?'. Withing a few weeks my entire class said "omggggg" with that typical Dutch G at the end.
As for LOL, yes, I still say that out loud. We don't say El-Oh-El though, we say "lol"and it's Dutch for fun. So yes, I say that out loud a lot.

6. Do you ever wear the same clothing item more than once?
Uhm, yeah?! What else do you expect me to do? Wear a shirt and throw it away? And if you mean wearing an item two days in a row, then yes, I do that. I basically live in my Batman sweater when I don't have to go to college.

7. How many tweets do you have?
540, most of them from online wizarding duels or discussions with Neal, Catalina and Bryleigh.

8. Instagram, Twitter or Tumblr?
I don't see the point of Tumblr, I'm sorry, but it's true. I just don't get it.
Instagram would be a waste of time since I only take pictures when I'm on vacation.
As for Twitter... I set the account up to promote my blog, but now I only use it to chat with blog buddies.

9. What do you spend most of your time doing?
Working on the huge amount of assignments, essays and reports I have to write. It's not much fun, but as long as I'm not a world-famous blogger, college will be my number 1 priority. One day I'll have to take care of myself, make a living, pay rent... And I can't do all that without a proper education.
When I'm not working for college, I'm working on blog posts and novels so I can make my dream of becoming a writer come true.

10. Who are your favorite YouTubers?
Why is everyone so obsessed with YouTubers these days?
I don't have any favorite YouTubers. There's one Dutch guy who has a series of videos (actually he has several series but I only like the one) and posts a new video every Thursday. I always watch those videos, but I'm not a huge fan who freaks out every time a video is posted.
Oh, and I also have a thing for the guy from YouTube Explained. Don't ask me why, just don't.

11. How often do you do your nails?
I'm not exactly keeping track of that. What does doing your nails even mean? Does clipping them count, or do you have to polish and file them too? Either way, it's not something that I do very often.

12. Are you a shopaholic?
Only when I'm in a book store.

13. How many times have you watched Mean Girls?
Never. I'm not planning on watching it either. I don't even know what it's about, so next question please!

14. Do you own a lot of clothes?
Actually, I do. I'm still wearing the same size clothes as I did four years ago, so I've accumulated a huge amount of clothes over the years. I never throw anything away, unless it's full of holes.

15. Do you take pictures of food before you eat it?
When I eat something special, like guinea pig or Sacher Torte, I take a picture. A also take a picture when I'm eating something my friends love. For example: a friend of mine is obsessed with schnitzels, so every time I eat one I send him a pic and then we joke about schnitzels for days.

16. Do you wear make up every day?
I never wear any make up. I always end up poking mascara in my own eyes. I think looking a little bit prettier is not worth the extreme pain of having a mascara brush poked into your eye...

17. What are your average grades in school?
Been a straight A student all my life. Learning and memorizing stuff is my one and only useful talent!

18. How do you usually style your hair?
Does brushing it count as styling?

19. Do you always look presentable?
Hahahahahahahahaha. No.
I wear oversized Harry Potter and superhero shirts when I don't have to go to college. I don't put much effort into doing my hear on weekends. I just don't care that much about looking presentable. The thing with me and clothes and looking presentable is that I'm not one of those people who wants to look amazing every second. I just want to be comfortable. And that cute summer dress? That's not me. Harry Potter shirt and five year old shorts, that's me. If people don't like that, it's their problem, the can look away. As long as I'm comfortable with what I'm wearing, I don't care if others think I don't look 'presentable'.

So now you've seen it, I'm not exactly average. I'm not exactly common. I may be common and average amongst bloggers, but they're not exactly common and average; they are awesome! I hope they stay that way. Stay Awesome, guys!

Quite a while ago, my awesome friend Neal Kind from Daily Diaries nominated me got the Sisterhood of the World Blogger Award. Funny, 'cause he's a dude. By the way, I'm panicking. No idea why I'm telling that. Maybe it's some adult anxiety kicking in. Can you imagine me living on my own? My god, the apartment would be a mess within days. And I can't cook anything else than lasagna...
Okay, focus. Back to this award. Because there are some questions to answer, you know :)

1. Your guilty pleasure?
Music? Taylor Swift. Have you ever listened to her lyrics? She's a story teller, I say, not just an artist!
Books? Chicklit. Best to read during midterms and finals. You don't even need to pay attention to the plot, after 20 pages you already know what's going to happen.
Food? Hagelslag sandwiches with peanut butter.
Guilty pleasure in whateverness? Thinking I'm a better blogger than people with 1000 followers, who just post pictures of their feet. I like ranting about how my 'poetry' is at least better than a picture of feet.

2. One book you wish you could read all over again for the first time?
I wish I could read The Hunger Games all over again, without accidentally reading the blurb of Catching Fire before reading The Hunger Games. I brought stupidity to a whole new level that day.

3. Worst book you ever read? The one which disappointed you the most.
I was very, very disappointed in I Am Number Four. It was just so 'meh'. Every part of it could have been awesome, but it was just so mediocre that it sucked.

4. If books could talk like actually talk which book would you like to talk to?
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, you're going to tell me the exact location of Hogwarts right now! I won't take 'no' for an answer!

5. (Okay this might be toughest of them all) Favourite character from any book you've ever read?
I guess Annabeth Chase is my favorite character ever. She would not panic just because she doesn't know the last name of the person guiding her through her internship.

6. Your favourite Song,Artist and band?
My favorite song is called Half Moon Bay, a song by my favorite band Train. From the very first time I heard the first line, "This ain't a threat but I think I better warn ya, Gonna fall in love if you go to California", I was a goner. Tiburon, San Jose, all the places I saw on the signs when we rode through the Bay Area are in this song. It gives me this feeling of homecoming and lets me forget all about the rainy polder I'm in right now.

7. If you are writing a novel and you want to include someone you know, who would you choose?
Actually I base most of my characters on people I know, but I exaggerate their characteristics or combine them with others. It's the main reason I won't be able to publish some of my work: it's too obvious who's who in that story.

8. What genre do you usually go for? Which is your favourite book outside that genre?
When I read I read literally everything I can get my hands on. Favorites of mine are mostly sci-fi and dystopian, but I've fallen in love with the Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. Mostly because the murderers are always crazy.

9. Book that made you cry after/while reading?
Last time I read Mockingjay I cried my eyes out. First time I was totally okay with everyone dying... until I realized that in an alternate universe, or even in another country, me and my friends would be the ones dying. I don't know with this realization hit me all of a sudden, but I guess it's because we've come to the age where we slowly take over a piece of the burden that comes with war, religion and politics in this crazy world of ours.

10. Your views on Twilight movie or book? (Imagine me in that 'The Saw' joker mask saying :"I want to play a game" bwhaha)
Honestly? I fell asleep while reading New Moon. It was a warm summer day, I was lying on my back in the sun with this book in my hands... And the book came closer to my face... And closer...
'Good book, Envy?' I suddenly heard my Mom say. She was laughing. I woke up, opened my eyes and noticed I'd fallen asleep with the book on top of my head. After that, nothing could fix my already fragile relationship with Twilight.

I'd love to nominate people, but this thing will be going around in circles if I do. Besides, I'm still panicking. I've got to get my stuff together now. Be back soon. Without the panic. I hope.

Stay Awesome!

I was very exctied to see that I was tagged for this one. Most of the time I feel like tags force you to answer awkward questions, but the quality of these things have gone up a lot over the past few months :) The Handwriting Tag is something I'd never expected to find on the internet, where looking at a video of a sleeping cat isactually more important than being able to spell the word 'cat'.
Anyway, I was tagged and had to write my questions by hand. Not a very big problem, except for the fact that I write in three different styles. The first one is the one I use when taking notes in class: totally illegible to anyone but me. Then there's the one I use for writing down ideas and quick notes to my Mom. According to her, this is almost as illegible as the first one.
And then there's the handwriting you see on my tests and in my blogging notebook. Straight, clear and totally decipherable! That's the one I'll be showing you in my Handwriting Tag :)

At some point in our life, we all have to stop being egoistic and demanding jerks and be grateful for what we already have. Thanksgiving is tomorrow, but we don't celebrate that in the Netherlands. But what if we all have a turkey sandwich and read a post about what I'm grateful for? I've already got the Grateful Blogger Tag, thanks to Catalina Blue from the emo wolverine writes, I'm fixing myself a turkey sandwich and... let's go!

Rules:
  • Thank the person who nominated you, they will surely appreciate it! Also, leave a link back to the person who nominated you.
  • Write about ten things you are grateful for. Here is the tricky part though; you can't just say you are grateful for gum or video games or whatever "little" thing it is you want to discuss. Think deeply about what is really important to you, such as family, or life itself. Explain why you are thankful for those things.
  • Tag ten bloggers; our goal is to tag everyone!! Comment on the blogs you nominate so they will know that they were tagged!
  • Add the pic above to your sidebard or award page, thanking the person (or people) who tagged you.

The first thing I'm grateful for is the way I've grown over the past few months. When old high school friends see me now, they see a totally different Envy than they used to see. I'm a long way from being the strong and confident girl I want to be, but I know how to act confident. There are days, seldom though they are, when I am not insecure at all. I just go with the flow and see where I end up. It's working out fine so far and I've really overcome some personal fears and phobias. I'm a better person now than I was a year ago.

#2
I'm also grateful for the friends I've made over the past years. We're drifting more and more apart now, but they are still there for me when I need them, just one phone call away. I've also made a lot of new friends since I started college and one old friend... Let's just say G. and I have become a lot closer since we're going to the same college, both studying to become teachers. It's crazy how much fun we can have with bad puns based on our most important study book, the Manual for Teachers.

#3
Speaking of college, I'm super grateful for more or less landing an internship! Internships are a huge part of my curriculum. A friend of mine had place for an extra intern at her intern-school, so now we're both doing an internship teaching German at a high school in Rotterdam!

#4
What else? Well, I'm grateful to be here at Picking up the Pieces, sharing too much information with all you guys. Blogging has become an important part of my life. I'm glad I am able to do this. I can't really explain how much blogging means to me. Just take my word that it is very very very important!

#5
When it comes to blogging, I'm also grateful for all my 45 GFC followers! You are amazing! Every time I see someone new following me I do this utterly ridiculous victory dance. Lately my Dad joins me in these dances and he likes this so much that he wants me to reach 50 GFC followers as soon as possible. He even made a bet on how long it would take me XD
Reaching 50 would be amazing, but I'm grateful for reaching 45. It's not a whole lot, but if you'd told me two months ago that I'd have 45 followers before the end of the year, I would have laughed at you.

#6
Another thing I'm grateful for is being part of the Teenage Blogger Central team. I'm a greeter there and I come up with ideas for guest posts every now and then. It makes me feel useful and I like to see the community grow. If you're a teenage blogger, head over to Teenage Blogger Central and join our community! We're so freaking awesome, you don't want to miss our amazingness!

#7
It may sound cheesy, but I'm also very grateful for having parents as great as mine. They've shown me a lot of the world before I turned eighteen. They've supported me in my darkest hours. They love the fact that I'm blogging. They're proud of me for not giving up on my dream of becoming a writer. They're very sweet for thinking that 45 followers is a whole lot these days.
They're amazing and I wouldn't know where I'd be without them.

The last thing I can think of that I'm truly grateful for at this very moment is the scholarship I get from the Dutch government. Every month I get some money so I can go to college. I'm very happy with this money, because money would've been too tight to mention if I would've been denied this scholarship. Now I can go to college without being a gigantic financial burden on my parents and I am very grateful for that. Sometimes I even have a little money left at the end of the month. Most of the time I have to get it from the sparce clicks on the ad in my sidebar though, but that's okay. At least my parents won't have to change their way of living just because I wanted to go to college!

Naming ten things is very difficult. I'll leave it at eight for tonight. I'm quite sure that I'll come up with two more things as soon as I close my laptop, just like I always knew the answers to the hard questions on my math tests three hours after handing it in.

Tagging people? Oh right, almost forgot about that part. Let's see... I won't be able to do ten in this department either, since most bloggers in my part of the blogosphere have already been tagged.
Anyways, I'm tagging these awesome bloggers!
Riley @Smiles No Matter
Kathie K @A Sea Change
Jenna @Sparkly Kid
Holly @Inky Quill and Paper
A Girl without a Name @Sunsets and Sundays
Ruya Preetika @Waking Moments

Stay Awesome!

Jenna from Sparkly Kid has awarded me! For the first time in my blogging career, I received the One Lovely Blog Award. Thank you Jenna for this amazing award!

The Rules Of This Award:
1. Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
2. List the rules and display the award.
3. Add 7 facts about yourself.
4. Nominate 15 other bloggers.
5. Follow the blogger who nominated you.

Seven facts about me:

  1. Once upon a time I vowed that I'd never have a Twitter account. And now I'm seriously thinking of breaking that vow...
  2. I've recently learned how to make the ultimate Caesar Salad
  3. I'm taking a Chinese course at college, starting next month
  4. I'm saving money so I can buy a ticket to the States and make some things from my List happen
  5. I've found the most amazing little shop in the Koopgoot in Rotterdam, can't wait to go Christmas shopping there!
    Sorry for mentioning Christmas already!
  6. I need to buy a new camera, it's been slowly dying since my Dad dropped it on the Inka Trail
  7. In conlcusion to that and #4, I desperately need a job -.-"

Okay so now I have to nominate 15 bloggers. Which is an awful lot. I don't even follow that many active bloggers, I'm afraid... Is five okay too?

  • Riley from Smiles No Matter
  • Youngjoo from Lost in Wonderland
  • Kathie from A Sea Change
  • Morning Kay from Good Morning, Morning!
  • A Girl without a Name from Sunsets and Sundays
Stay awesome!

Some time ago, okay maybe quite a long time ago, I was tagged by MorningTime4 from The Ups and Downs of My Not-So-Average Life for the Twenty Things You Might Not Know About Me Blog Tag. I owe how a great big THANK YOU, not only for tagging me, but also for the amazing job she did on redesigning my blog!

Da Rules:
1. Copy and paste the questions below, answer them in a blog post. If you like to to a vlog version: go ahead!
2. Tag anywhere from 2-10 bloggers at the end of your post.
3. Use the title: 20 things you might not know about me blog tag. (Yes, I cheated on that one, but my God, it's such a mouth ful!)
4. Use the hashtag #20thingsblogtag when sharing on social media.

1. How tall are you?
Last time I answered this question I was 1.68m. When I saw this question was also part of the Twenty Things Tag, I ran to the wall where my Mom used to measure me and measured myself. I should've known better: I'm 18 and 1.68m is the tallest I'll ever be without creepy plastic surgery.

2. Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?
A lot of people don't know that I have some decent crafting skills. Every year around Christmas I make tiny snowmen to put in the Christmas tree. I also make stars, sheeps, reindeer and penguins. I barely do any crafting for therest of the year, except for knotting lots and lots of friendship bracelets.

3. What's your biggest blog-related pet peeve?
I've got so many. Considering all my blogging pet peeves, it's a miracle I'm still blogging XD
One of my pet peeves is seeing that someone is following each and every one of my blogging besties, but not me. It makes me insecure and I'll be like: Am I not good enough for you? :(

4. What's your biggest non-blog-related pet peeve?
People who think their bag is a person with characteristics, needs, hopes and dreams too, in so far that they think their bag is more worthy of the last empty seat in a crowded bus than you.

5. What's your favorite song?
At the moment it's Cassy O' by George Ezra. I listened to it in Peru and it's been one of my favorites ever since. Great song to sing/scream when you're frustrated. Go ahead and sing along!

6. What's your favorite Etsy shop that isn't yours?
I'm not on Etsy and I don't visit the site anymore either. Sorry...

7. What's your favorite way to spend your free time when you're alone?
I spend most of my me-time dreaming! That can be literally dreaming, like when I'm asleep, but also the kind of dreaming you do when you're writing fiction or reading a book. As long as the activity takes your mind to a different place, I call it dreaming (unless the activity involves drugs or alcohol, in which case you're just being stupid).

8. What's your favorite fast food?
The Chili Chicken Burgers from McDonald's. They're so good, you could wake me up in the middle of the night for one of those.

9. Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their names?
Nope. My Dad is allergic to everything with hair or feathers. But if I ever get a hamster, I'm gonna call him Hammibal.

10. What are your number one favorite fiction and non-fiction books?
Favorite fiction is the Hunger Games, no doubt about it. I love those books for the critic view on society. I've been a devoted fan since 2009, way before the mass hysterics broke loose (excuse my inner hipster for breaking free for a moment).
I don't have a favorite non-fiction. I just don't like non-fiction and I'm not gonna say something like 'but this is the one I hate the least', that's just stupid.

11. What's your favorite beauty product?
Ha! Have you ever seen my face? That thing doesn't do beauty! Even make-up can't save it! But I've got one single lipstick which I love.

12. When were you last embarrased? What happened?
I was at a party. I was really nervous, because I barely knew anyone except an old high school friend. He asked me if I was nervous. 'Yeah, how do you know?' I asked.
'Oh, you've got sweaty stains under your armpits.'
Well, thank you. Now I'm much more comfortable and ready to party...

13. If you could only drink one beverage (besides water) for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Hot chocolate. I drink it all year round, even when it's 30 degrees Celsius outside.

14. What's your favorite movie?
Right now it's Guardians of the Galaxy. I love the terrible, totally not sci-fi-like music, I love the bad jokes and tiny Groot is just too cute.
By the way, 'Groot' is Dutch for 'big' or 'tall'. We only pronounce it differently. Awesome, right?

15. What were you in high school: prom queen, nerd, cheerleader, jock, valedictorian, band geek, loner, artist, prep?
Definitely a nerd. Later on I became more of a hipster hermit who had as little contact with her classmates as possible.

16. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
San Francisco, without a doubt. I practically grew up in the Bay Area, I spent almost all my childhood summers there. If I ever become a super succesful writer I'm going to buy myself a house there.

17. PC or Mac?
PC, because Apple products and I have a mutual feeling of intense dislike toward eachother. I once used my friends Maurits' Mac and I was constantly panicking because it did things I didn't want it to do. I also almost broke my Granddad's iPhone (actually it was my Granddad's fault the thing was dying, but then he gave it to me so I could 'fix' it) and almost dropped E.'s iPad multiple times.

18. Last romantic gesture from a crush, date boy/girlfriend, spouse?
Well, once upon a time I went on a sorta kinda date and the guy held a door open for me... That's about as romantic as it'll ever get in my life. The date didn't work out and all the other guys in the known universe are like Apple products: they don't like me.

19. Favorite celebrity?
Do athletes count? I'm not really interested in actors or singers, but I do have the worst celebrity crush ever on British sprinter Adam Gemili (don't ask me why, just don't).

20. What blogger do you secretly wanted to be best friends with?
Secretly? The whole world may know that I'd like to be best friends with Catalina, F and Riley, but I consider all my followers who comment every now and then as friends.

Now on to the tagging!
I tag Fionnula, who recently started following me on Bloglovin' and she's the only person who follows me only on Bloglovin' who actually leaves comments on my posts! Thank you for being awesome!
I also tag Ruya Preetika, who didn't post for a while on her blog Waking Moments, but she's back now and that makes me so happy!
Have fun answering these questions and stay awesome!

I remember when I first started blogging. Anomination for an award seemed to be the ultimate blogging achievement. These days I get nominated quite often, but every nomination is special and has me walking around with a huge grin on my face, gazing at the screen with eyes full of overexcitement.
This time I was nominated by F from the Fence of Stars for the Sunshine Award and then, before I could do the post, Catalina from the emo wolverine writes nominated me too! Thank you guys, thank you so much for nominating me! You're both great bloggers. I don't know where I'd be without you.

I guess most of us know the rules, but in case someone is new to blogging, here they are:
(1). State 5 facts about yourself.
(2). Answer the 5 questions.
(3). Create 5 new questions and nominate some more bloggers for the award.

Since I was nominated twice I think I'm supposed to tell you ten facts. No problem, I've got lots of not really interesting stuff to tell.

  1. I'm currently learning to cook - which is driving my Mom crazy. Apparently the result is edible, but the way I get there is more dangerous than the current situation in the Middle East.
  2. When I'm hungry my stomach makes more noise than an airplane during take-off
  3. I can touch my big toe with my third toe. People in school say it's creepy to see.
  4. When I buy necklaces I always choose the one that doesn't fit in with the other necklaces on the stand, because it's different and doesn't fit in just like me.
  5. In October 2012 I started knitting a Ravenclaw scarf. I finished it last week.
  6. I absolutely love writing in red ink. It gives me a feeling of authority.
  7. I never use mascara. Last time I did I almost poked my eye out.
  8. My hair is so thick and heavy I can probably knock someone out with my ponytail.
  9. My ultimate comfort food is my Mom's special meatball sandwich.
  10. I once dreamed that the sun was a gigantic orange that wanted to eat the earth
Now on to F's questions. I've got to say these are interesting questions (I wouldn't have expected anything else from her).

1. What is your favorite mythical creature?
I'm a bit of a weirdo who has an interest in banshees and hamadryads.
Banshees are creepy women who announce the death of a person. They are said to make terrible screaming noises. I don't know why I like them, because my other favorite mythical creature is so gentle. Hamadryads are basically Greek tree spirits. They live and die with their trees. I'm currently writing a story about one who lives in an ancient oak that gets transported to and planted in Central Park. Culture clash and stuff coming up, you know the stuff.

2. If you had to change accents, which would you choose?
Aussie, mate. I already have a thick American accent which got me into a world of trouble in high school. American accents weren't 'proper' accents, I had to have a British accent. I refused. Instead I wanted to annoy them even more by changing my accent into the one they hate even more than an American accent: Australian.

3. What was the last good book you read?
A lot of people won't agree with me on this, but I'd say The House of Hades. It's right up my alley with all those bad jokes and puns. Okay, maybe it's not making me think about the problems in the world, maybe it doesn't offer me a new view on humanity, but it was a great read.

4. What's your favorite modern slang/phrase?
So as a Dutchy I know very little about English slang. I only know 'yolo' and that only reminds me of getting run over by cars in Rome... I don't know much about Dutch slang either. The only thing I know about that is that Dutch boys between the ages of 8 and 15 suddenly call eachtother 'kil', which is really stupid because it's pronounced exactly the same as 'keel', meaning 'throat'. So when you pass a group of those kids it's like they're all yelling THROAT at eachother (yes the caps were necessary). This is why I'm not a fan of slang.

5.What's a little-known fact you've just found out?
I don't want to confirm anything in case the Peruvian maffia comes to kill me for putting this on the internet but... but...
Maybe, just maybe, some archeologists in Peru found another abandoned Inka village in the jungle, smaller in size than Machu Picchu, but also awesome? Maybe?

Think we're done? Think again! I've also got Catalina's questions to answer :)

1. What's your favorite part of your favorite season?
My favorite season is winter. Every season has its good and bad things, but none of them is as awesome as winter. The best part is when snow colors the world white for the first time. I love that moment.

2.Describe one event that happened to you this summer which you will probably remember for the rest of your life.
You can find that here. I don't think I will ever forget the Inka Trail.

3. The worst book ever written- in your opinion?
I can't pinpoint a worst book ever, but Elixir, by Hilary Duff, is bad. And I don't mean the book as a whole, but the writing itself. Switching from past tense to present and back within one sentence? That's just bad writing. You've got to stick with the tense you chose - at least within one paragraph.

4. Natural tourist spots (eg beaches) vs man made tourist spots (eg amusement parks)- where would you rather go?
Natural, because there are always places in nature with no one else. Mankind doesn't like me and I don't like mankind, so I have to get out and go to a forest or something every now and then. People are judgmental, trees aren't. Okay, an acorn might fall on your head, but it won't leave an emotional scar like an insult can. Long story short: I like trees better than people, so natural tourist spots for me.

5. If you could invent something out of a science fiction novel or movie, what would you make?
It's not actual science fiction, but I once read a Donald Duck story in which there was a machine that instantly wrote down your thoughts. That would be nice. Most of the time when I'm writing my head does the entire paragraph in one go, but by the time my hand is half-way there, my head has forgotten how the paragraph should end...

So that's it for the Sunshine Award this time. I usually nominate people, but everyone I know has been nominated in the last week or so. Besides, college starts tomorrow and I'm way too nervous to come up with any questions. Sorry :(
